Clarifying the Huckabee numbers

Kudos to readers for pointing out the muddiness with which my previous post on Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin in 2012 was written. Here’s some clarifying data to substantiate the possibility (and I emphasize potential) that a Palin-Huckabee/Huckabee-Palin ticket may have.

According to a Public Policy Poll released June 18, 2009 here’s how the potential Republican candidates fare in terms of favorability among conservatives.

Sarah Palin 72%
Mike Huckabee 68%
Newt Gingrich 61%
Mitt Romney 58%

Most notably, when compared to President Barack Obama, Mr. Huckabee’s favorability among conservatives grows to 76%, which exceeds that of Ms. Palin (74%). Mr. Romney, whom all the commenters and e-mailers love, is at 69%.

P.S. I’m not pushing a “Huckabee agenda.” (But I am laughing while I type that.)

You are just a shill for the Huckabee machine. Admit it!

  2. voter says:

    Thanks for the qualification.

In the end, I think you have a two-way contest between Huckabee and Romney. Conservatives might like Palin, but they are afraid she cannot win in a general election(and I think they are quite right).

Huckabee will begin where he left off, with his base, and probably lots more that he has won over through his tremendous media exposure. Romney will begin where he left off, but this time his competitor (Huckabee) will have name recognition, lots more fund-raising ability and, yes, all that great charisma, charm and eloquence that moved him from an asterisk to the candidate ending with the second most delegates. He is strategically linking himself with the conservative, anti-establishment base — but he still has lots of moderate/independents in his corner, because they all like him. As an example, his recent debate with Jon Stewart over abortion has won praise from all corners. The man simply knows how to debate.

It is much too early to say, but I certainly like Huckabee’s chances. (And, yes, I am pushing a Huckabee agenda).

  3. robert evans says:

Newt is smart and very capable, but do not think he can win over indepentants. Romney speaks differently out of the two sides of his mouth-some days he has been for abortion, other days “no.’ Same for universal health care, which he brought into Mass. when Governor. He is the favorite of the wealthy Eastern elite, who are opportunists and do not have moral or ethical standards.
Thus, we are left with Huckabee and Palin, with Huckabee having more than it takes to make an outstanding president. He is the only one who can win out of all the Republican candidates. After our present anti-Judeo-Christian president he will get us back on track.

  4. jeannie says:

Let us look at last presidential campaign, with sarah palin, etc.
she held her own, and you must remember in this next election, you will see hillary clinton come on like gang busters, this time obama won’t have a chance without her constituencies this time? So maybe this time, he will support her and help pay for her campaign, oops dont think so.
So you will not see sarah in the vp spot unless we got a hot one like mitt romney, anyone endorsed by john mccain, huckabee, tons more when it comes to public servant track record wanting sarah as their shotgun, other wise, she can hold her own as the first Republican woman elected as President of the United States. Women can change their minds anytime they feel like it as we all well know now, so vp or pres, she can give the democrats the run for the money, and they are all going to spend alot of money, so get ready. Please keep it clean, nice, and fair this time, it would sure be a change, if everyone would stick to the issues, not the idiotic subjects like wardrobe, husbands with pants down, sibling mess ups, problemed children, what yu did 40 years ago when you were 17?
Can you imagine a clean campaign? oops i dont think so.

  5. geoffrey aronson says:

Newt will never get the nomination. He´s passe´, without a political base. Romney is not the real McCoy and enough people have sensed that….It´s going to be a slugfest between Huckabee and Palin. My guess is that Huckabee will get the nod on character. Palin´s star will fade on the lack thereof and her inability to strategise.

  6. Linda says:

All of the people out here in this country KNOW that it is Governor Huckabee who will be our nominee in 2012! He is the ONLY one who can go up against Obama and wipe the ground with him during the debates, far excel on the issues, and stand tall with the character and integrity we DESERVE in our president!! The pundits and commentators can push their agenda all they want. It will be “we the people” this next election and the people want Huckabee.

  7. Shelley says:

Huck would make an outstanding president – he has my vote!

  8. To “I Love Romney”

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess you think those pollsters are Huckabee shills, too, right?

  9. Chris – Public Policy Polling is run by known liberals – just click on the link above to see what they said about Rush Limbaugh for proof. So it is no wonder such a polling group would be pushing Huckabee. From what I understand, Chris, you have been on the Limbaugh’s show defending the Huckster before so you should not be surprised either.

Face it Romney is the guy the real country wants regardless of what you hicks in Arkansas think.

  10. QuoVadisAnima says:

    I love Romney,

You are so right! All those polls like this one that are showing Huckabee with more favorables than Romney are nothing more than liberal manipulation of conservatives!

Once Romney begins campaigning based on his economic prowess & leadership with Romney-care in Massachusetts (which has had huge cost over-runs & the Democrats are admiring as a model for their socialized care) & his encouragement of John McCain to follow Bush & the Democrats on the stimulus bill that just absolutely had to pass or the economy would collapse (& yet all it actually did was line the pockets of the liberals’ pets) as examples of his fiscal acumen, he will sweep the country!!! ;-)

  11. “I love Romney”

3 Wow’s in response to your comment.

    First Wow:

Wow. Huckabee’s got national polling groups working for him now? In 2008 he could barely get a campaign office set up in each of the early states! And I thought I was kidding about the whole Huckabee shilling pollsters comment…silly me!

    Second Wow:

Wow. How in the world did you know I’ve been on Limbaugh’s show? I certainly don’t have that kind of national name recognition. Either you’re a good friend of mine, or you’re some sort of spy/stalker, or you stole my identity and know everything about me. Kinda freaky…

    Third Wow.

Wow. If Romney is the guy the “real country” wants, I guess all those states Huckabee won (Iowa, West Virginia, Kansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana) plus all the states McCain won must not be part of the “real country.” Mitt had better start buying up some summer homes in some of those fake states if he’s going to have much of a shot in 2012!

  12. I love Romney says:

Chris – I am not saying Huckabee paid the pollesters but the liberal media has always had that warm tingling feeling for Huckabee. Heck, MSNBC loved him; don’t you wonder why that is! I fully expect Huckabee to spend the next couple years talking like a conservative on Fox News all the while charming the liberals with his populous compassion.

As for being a spy, it does not matter how much you want to be Rushed to Excellence, Huckabee will never win out of the South or Iowa. To win the White House, you have to do well in states like Ohio, Michigan, and Penn. Face it, Romney has the best chance in these states.

  13. voter says:

I Love Romney – exactly why does Romney have the best chance in Ohio and Penn? These are “folksy” kind of states, not establishment elite. And remember Romney wasn’t even on the ballot last time — most people tend to vote for the same candidate all things being equal. Honestly, the way things are in Detroit these days, I wouldn’t automatically assign Michigan to anyone, although Romney cetainly has the edge. And this time round, Huckabee will take SC. So he has two of the first four.

If we are going to face “facts” — the “facts” suggest we don’t know where things stand execpt that Huckabee begins where he left off — but this time with name recognition, more money and that same great charismatic personality. Romney begins with the same money, same name recognition and linking himself to a Republican elite that isn’t quite that popular these days.

  14. I don’t care for Romney but you Huckabee commenters may be in for a surprise when Huckabee decides to keep his high payin’ job at Fox instead of running for President. He has already given Arkansas the finger on the Senate race. He talks a big game but at the end of the day he worships the Almighty Dollar more than anything else.

  15. [...] As I’ve noted recently (and much to the disappointment of the Huckabee and Romney commentators on this site as of late), Ms. Palin remains popular among certain segments of the Republican Party. She’s certainly the most well known, and while her unfavorables are in the 40’s, she remains (or, maybe I should say, remained) an early frontrunner for the 2012 Republican nomination. [...]
