This really makes no sense. In the midst of heated wet-dry issue in Arkadelphia the local newspaper, The Daily Siftings Herald, is choosing not to cover it – at least not comprehensively.
Lance Turner of Arkansas Business points me to this AB story on the topic. Here’s the paper’s rationale:
Basically, the paper’s editorial policy means that it will do “day-after” stories, articles that describe what took place during a “newsworthy” event. And an article like the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s April 13 report on the pro-booze camp’s renewed petition drive did not meet the definition.
[Editor Dan] Marsh said the decision was not made because advertisers threatened to pull ads. And the pro-wet lobby is advertising with the paper, said Tim Kauffman, a local dentist supporting alcohol sales.
The reception to articles written about the issue has always brought the same storm the next day, Marsh said.
Hottest issue in the city and the local newspaper’s essentially taking a pass? Makes great sense. God I love [local] newspapers [that don't cover local news]. You’re gonna miss ‘em when they’re gone.
The Daily really is a pretty sad excuse for a paper.
