Arkansas Business reports today that the Arkansas Democrat Gazette has cut 50 to 60 jobs at the paper, which includes 7 newsroom jobs, 5 in Little Rock and 2 in northwest Arkansas. Lance Turner has more over at his blog. Very sorry to hear it.

On 02.09 Editor and Publisher went with a story citing Dem Gaz columnist Jay Grelen’s letter to TIME magazine in response to an article published by Walter Isaacson. In the letter Mr. Grelen defends publisher Walter Hussman’s decision not to give away content for free. He argues, “Walter Hussman isn’t talking theory…He has written, and continues to update, the how-to manual. He led the charge to charge, and he has a healthy newspaper to prove he was right.” Still feel that way, Jay?

UPDATE: Max Brantley of the Arkansas Times has specifics. “Few people who work for newspapers, daily or weekly, can contemplate the future comfortably,” he writes.

UPDATE II: Take it easy, readers. Yes, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette did cover this in today’s paper. Here’s a link to it from the northwest Arkansas edition which is available for free at http://www.nwanews.com/adg.

UPDATE III: More on this, including a memorandum from the publisher, at Max Brantley’s Arkansas Times blog.
