The shrinking newsroom
There’s more bad news for the newspaper business. Lance Turner (via his blog) points me to a new report by the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) that concludes U.S. daily newspapers shrunk their newsrooms by 2,400 journalists last year, a 4.4% decrease that’s the biggest year-over-year cuts since the ASNE started this survey 30 years ago.
According to the report, 52,000 journalists work in daily newsrooms - - a number that has not been that low since 1984.
An additional point of note, “Because of the wave of layoffs and hiring freezes, the percentage of journalists of color in daily newsrooms actually grew by a tiny margin, to 13.52% from 13.43 percent of all journalists.” Men continue to out number women 63% to 37% the report found.
