Bud Cummins sounds off at Clinton School of Public Service

While acknowledging he served at the political pleasure of the president, fired U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins said Thursday the Bush administration failed to “insulate prosecutors from outside political pressures.”

Cummins, one of eight U.S. attorneys fired from their posts last year, said an “overenamorization” of the White House and personal failings caused the firings to spiral into congressional subpoenas and hearings.

Cummins laid most of the blame on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for failing to place a “firewall” between politics and the work of the Justice Department.
“Once you lose your credibility, people question every decision you make,” Cummins said.

“Now you’re seeing it,” report the Associated Press.

Clinton in trouble in Arkansas?

Poll numbers suggest otherwise, but according to Political Insider (citing Roll Call), Senator the Democrats in the state’s Congressional delegation “aren’t clamoring to support her 2008 presidential bid.”

The report also notes, “The Clinton campaign is in the process of developing a group of Arkansas Ambassadors — a group of people who will travel around the state and other neighboring states talking about Clinton’s record as first lady. The group is modeled on a group of traveling surrogates who did the same thing for then-Gov. Bill Clinton (D) during his 1992 presidential bid.”

Arkansas is an important state for Clinton, who may be looking to prove that she can win in the South.  The best thing she can do is install a political apparatus that knows Arkansas and, more importantly, knows how to win it.

Clinton and health care - round 2?

“We’re going to have universal health care when I’m president — there’s no doubt about that. We’re going to get it done,” the New York senator and front-runner for the 2008 nomination said.  Here’s the story.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg entering the race?

The Washington Post reports that Bloomberg might make a run as a self-financed independent.  The decision won’t come until early next year when Bloomberg knows who the two major party’s will nominate.  Could it be Clinton v. Giuliani v. Bloomberg?

Uh-oh

Has Karl Rove waived his right to assert executive privilege regarding e-mails related to the US Attorney firings?  It’s possible reports politicalinsider.com.   Here’s more.

This seems like an interesting topic for the Clinton School of Public Service.  It may be too political, seeing as how President Clinton tried to assert the privilege on several occassions and Republicans tried to take him to the cleaners on it.  Still, the scope of the protection is certainly a fitting academic topic and one worthy of public discussion.

Hillary to pick up Vilsack endorsement

According to the Des Moines Register.

Attorney-gate gets goofy

The Arkansas Times reports on a few e-mails sent by interim US Attorney Tim Griffin to his compadres at the Justice Department where Griffin invokes the girlfriend thing as an advantage.

“I am good friends with both chiefs of staff to [Arkansas Senators] Pryor and Lincoln. Pryor’s chief of staff is a good friend and Lincoln’s was my high school girlfriend,” Griffin writes. “Should I say anything to them? I would hate for my senators to be told without my peeps knowing? [sic]” Griffin wrote.

My peeps? What is this, junior high?

The Times also reports a quote from a Lincoln spokesperson that denies the high school romance.

“Tim Griffin’s claim is absolutely untrue,” the spokesman said. Griffin, one year older than Burks, had one overlapping year with her at Magnolia High School. They never dated, the spokesman said.

Glad we got that cleared up.

Kudos to the Times for turning up the heat on this issue. The Dem Gaz hasn’t touched it, presumably because they like what Rove and his cronies at Justice have done. Imperial Presidency? You betcha.

Arkie takes reigns of SC Republican Party

The Clinton Tapes

Historian Taylor Branch is set to write a book for release in 2008 about President Bill Clinton.  The book will based on a series of taped conversation Branch had with Clinton during his tenure in the White House.  Those sessions, nearly 80 in all, are the fodder for a new book by Mr. Branch, tentatively titled “Wrestling History: The Bill Clinton Tapes,” that Simon & Schuster plans to publish, according to the New York Times.

Obama consultant behind Hillary ad

The Huffington Post has identified the guy behind the Hillary ad circulating on the internet over ht past 48 hours.  Writes Huffington, “Well, today I can end the guessing. Last night, we sent out a challenge to the HuffPost team asking them to hit the phones and contact all their sources. As a result, we have learned the video was the work of Philip de Vellis, who was the Internet communications director for Sherrod Brown’s 2006 Senate campaign, and who now works at Blue State Digital, a company created by members of Howard Dean’s Internet Team.ver the past 48 hours.”

Edwards calls a press conference (Update II)

To discuss his wife’s health. The press conference is being held at noon today in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mrs. Edwards, 57, received a cancer diagnosis in 2004 almost on the day that Mr. Edwards, the vice-presidential candidate, and Senator John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, were defeated in their race for the White House.

A leading contributor to the campaign, speaking on condition of anonymity, said organizers had not been notified to cancel a long string of events scheduled before the end of March, the deadline for the first-quarter financial reports, according to the New York Times.

Update: The Politico is reporting that Edwards will suspend his campaign indefintely. Mrs. Edwards’ cancer has returned, according to MSNBC.

Update II: The Politico was wrong. Mrs. Edwards’ cancer has returned, this time in the bone, but John Edwards presidential campaign is continuing full steam ahead. “From our perspective, there was no reason to stop,” Edwards said. “I don’t think we seriously thought about it.”
